When it comes to biodynamic agriculture, it’s exactly what I suspected farming would be like. Living on a farm, getting up early in the morning, performing hard work, and just enjoying a simple form of living are things that I’ve always idealized. Unfortunately, my feelings towards this particular lifestyle have become rather jaded thanks in large part to the agriculture industry itself being drastically altered thanks to all sorts of commercialization. This includes the many forms of cruelty that the affected animals have to go through, as well as exchanging quality for profits, workers being exploited, and more.
Thankfully, an alternative option exists in the form of biodynamic agriculture. Simply defined, this type of agriculture includes all commercial aspects that traditional big agriculture doesn’t typically include. In essence, this means that biodynamic agriculture is responsible, harmonious, and sustainable. According to many farmers, this option is the only one that encompasses true farming.
In terms of biodynamic farming, this specific option goes farther than simple organic farming, as organic simply means that absolutely no chemicals whatsoever are used. Additionally, the farmers who choose to be organic also take the time to ensure that all of their livestock is fed organic food and that their farms are also as sustainable as possible.
With biodynamic agriculture, all aspects of farming are treated with the equal respect and dignity that they deserve. More emphasis, however, is placed on the overall balance of relationships associated with the farm itself, such as the plants, animals, and soil. A self-nourishing system is the main focal point of farms that use biodynamic agriculture, which enables every component to contribute to the farm’s sustainability via all of their natural functions. Furthermore, it also requires no kind of external influence.
Rudolf Steiner is credited with developing biodynamic agriculture in farming back in 1927 in his native Poland. Steiner began this by giving a series of eight lectures, which caused local farmers to become aware of the negative impact on both crops and livestock thanks to chemical fertilizers, as well as the overall condition of the soil itself. This caused Steiner to begin explaining his ideas regarding biodynamics, and a research group was later established in order to further look into Steiner’s concepts, as well as the benefits they would have on animals, soil, and plants.
Throughout approximately 50 different countries, biodynamic agriculture in farming is practiced, with all of the farms doing so receiving certification from the Demeter International agency in return. In modern society itself, biodynamic agriculture is something that continues to increase in popularity and use, which is an extremely positive step. This is something that has also been applied to various types of gardens, as well as vineyards and, believe it or not, beekeeping. Since concern and awareness from the general public is continuing to increase regarding this, it is becoming clear that biodynamic agriculture will soon become the premier system of agriculture throughout the entire world, which is a move that can only be viewed as bringing much more positive results.
